Speech contests are an important part of the Toastmaster program.  They provide an opportunity for the experienced speakers to compete against their peers. They also provide an opportunity for non-competing Toastmaster and the general public to learn by observing proficient speakers.  So speech contests are a total learning experience , benefiting both the competitor and the audience.

It's important that all speech contests are conducted properly, in a way that encourages speakers to compete and others to attend, to observe.
